Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Youth unemployment is a critical socio-economic issue facing many regions in Nigeria, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas like Yola South Local Government Area (LGA) in Adamawa State. The issue of unemployment among young people is influenced by a range of geopolitical factors, including local governance, regional politics, and socio-economic policies. In Yola South, the youth unemployment rate remains alarmingly high despite various national and state-level initiatives aimed at curbing the problem. Geopolitical dynamics, such as the allocation of resources, local government policies, and political leadership, significantly affect the availability of employment opportunities for young people (Musa et al., 2023). Additionally, ethnic and regional tensions, which often define the political landscape, can exacerbate the challenges young people face in accessing education, skills training, and employment opportunities (Akinwale & Raji, 2024). This study explores how the political and governance structures in Yola South, as well as broader geopolitical issues within Adamawa State, contribute to the high rates of youth unemployment.
Youth unemployment in Yola South can also be attributed to the poor implementation of policies designed to support entrepreneurship, industrial growth, and job creation. Despite initiatives such as the National Youth Employment Scheme, the impact of these programs is diluted by local governance challenges, including corruption, lack of political will, and inadequate infrastructure (Suleiman & Ibrahim, 2025). Furthermore, historical geopolitical events, including the ongoing security challenges in the northeastern region, have disrupted local economies and limited opportunities for youth employment in the area (Zubairu, 2024). Therefore, understanding the geopolitical causes of youth unemployment in Yola South is crucial to formulating effective solutions to the problem.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Youth unemployment in Yola South LGA is exacerbated by several geopolitical factors, including ineffective local government policies, regional instability, and the allocation of resources that often fail to address the specific needs of young people. The interplay of political leadership, ethnic dynamics, and the poor implementation of youth-focused policies has resulted in a growing unemployment crisis among the youth in this area. This study seeks to investigate the political and geopolitical factors contributing to the high youth unemployment rate in Yola South LGA.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypothesis
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide a detailed understanding of the geopolitical causes of youth unemployment in Yola South LGA, offering insights into the political and economic factors that shape employment outcomes for young people. The findings will be useful to local policymakers, state authorities, and national development agencies in formulating targeted interventions that address the root causes of youth unemployment in Adamawa State. Additionally, this research will contribute to the broader body of knowledge on the intersection of governance, politics, and unemployment, particularly in northern Nigeria, where youth unemployment is a pressing issue.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The scope of this study is limited to Yola South LGA, Adamawa State. The study focuses on identifying the geopolitical factors that contribute to youth unemployment within this specific region. Limitations include challenges in accessing up-to-date data on youth employment rates and policies, as well as potential biases in local government reports. Additionally, the study may face difficulties in obtaining accurate responses from political leaders and stakeholders due to the sensitive nature of the subject matter.
